Overlooking the beautiful Keri beach , on the coast of the Arabian Sea , the 16th century Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort is an architectural spectacle. This fort, situated on the north side of the banks of the Terekhol River. The Tiracol Fort Heritage is situated in the northern most fore land of Goa. It is 42 km from Panjim at the north most Taluka of Pernem, cut off from Goa by Tiracol river.


It was invaded by the Portuguese, who rebuilt it again in 1764 AD for the defense of Goa. Later, in 1961, the fort was used as a ground for freedom fighters during the liberation of Goa. Presently, this fort has been converted into a heritage hotel providing beautiful views of enchanting gun-enclosures and the vast sea.

Attractions Of Fort

The fort has in its courtyard the century old Church of St. Anthony. The church is opened only on special occasions and has a classical late Goan facade. The church is full of light and dominates an elegant look. Cross the court and walk up the narrow stone stairs, through short passages into split level rooms, which follow the shapes of headland: old furniture, superb views over the river Tiracol and the beaches and are the main attractions of the fort.

Mormugao Fort


You might expect a fort to have stern and uncluttered look - but not this one. The fort commands a magnificent look and is worthy of being visited. Dating back to 1624, this was once the most important of coastal forts. The fort is near to the internationally famous Marmagoa Harbour which was built to protect the harbour situated near the Vasco da Gama town.


It is situated at the extreme northwestern point of Salsete and guard the entrance to the port. Located just north of Vasco Da Gama city and just south of Mormugao Port, this is the closest fort to Goa's airport. Primarily, Mormugao was generalized to be the capital of the Portuguese empire, hence the fort was erected and in 1703 the viceroy moved into the town.

An Informative Inscription

An inscription over the fort of the gate reads (in translation from the Portuguese): The Catholic King Dom Filippe, the third of this name, reigning in Portugal, Dom Francisco da Gama, fourth Count of Vidigueira, Admiral of India, a member of His Majesty's Council and a Gentleman of the Royal Household, being Viceroy for the second time, this Fortress was begun, the first stone being laid on April 1624

By Air

History of Chapora Fort

The Chapora Fort Goa dating back to 1617, is one of the finest examples of Portuguese architecture. It was rebuilt by the Portuguese as a border watch tower and later Goa Chapora fort was deserted by the Portuguese in 1892 as the empire continued to draw farther North, known as the New Conquests. This Fort is mostly in ruins now. The massive walls and the scattered Muslim headstones are all that is left of Goa Chapora Fort. Deserted since the 19th century, it is in complete ruins today though the view down the coastline looks as wonderful as ever.

Cabo Palace Fort


Tourists generally get confused between the Cabo Palace Fort and the magnificently built Raj Bhavan? As, the fort has been transformed into Raj Bhavan it is a bit hard to recognize it. But nevertheless, you'll enjoy visiting this grandiose structure.


Built in 1540 A.D, this fort is situated on the south headland of the river Mandovi opposite Fort Aguada. The Cabo Fort is known severally in the modern times as the Cabo Fort, Cabo Palace, Cabo Raj Niwas and even Raj Bhavan. Currently, the house of the Governor's house, used to be the house of Viceroy in colonial India.

Rachol Fort

Located close to the famous Rachol Seminary, the Rachol Fort is mainly a collection of ruins at present. It is 7 km northeast of Margao and encircled by the dried-up fosse of an old Muslim fort and rice fields expanding to the east banks of the nearby Zuari River. Today, its fastidiously restored as sixteenth-century church and secluded theological collage, one wing of which has recently been converted into a museum which lie in the centre of the Catholic region. Very little is visible of its actual structure, like the archways, on the road leading to the famous Rachol Seminary.

Reis Magos Fort

Reis Magos Fort is located across the Mandovi river in the province of Bardez about two miles to the north east of Fort Aguada. Originally built in 1490 by Adil Shah and later on annexed by Portuguese in 1760, Reis Magos fort was build to protect the narrowest point on the mouth of an estuary of River Mandovi. Approximately two miles on north east of Fort Aguada, the fort lies in the district of Bardez. It houses Reis Magos church in its basement which is worth-seen. Its eminent positioning makes the views outside the fort very fascinating. The views from the rooms of fort towards the sea are simply breath taking. The fort was defended by 33 guns and a small garrison. The pavement of the fort is adorned with inscriptions and the most important of which is stored in a sanctuary. The fort gives a very commanding look from the Panaji side of Mandovi river. Earlier it was used as a residence of viceroys and later on converted as a fortress. Then it was occupied by the British between 1798-1813 and subsequently abandoned by the military and served as a prison until now.After the liberation from Portuguese, the fort was being used as prison. Presently, it has been projected for a hotel.
