Located on the Indo tibetan border, surrounded by Tibet to the east, Garhwal Himalyan to the south. About 200 km from Shimla strikingly beautiful district of Kinnaur where the the river Satluj carved deep gorges through the the high mountains. The Satluj river which rises on the southern slopes of Kailash mountain near Mansarover in Tibet flows through the Kinnaur valley. Very few rainfall and the desolate countryside can by compared to that of the Leh and Ladakh region. Almost every village has a gompa or a temple. The people of Kinnaur are very honest and simple. The od Hindustan - Tibet road which passes through the Kinnaur valley. Passing through the ancient villages of Wngtu, Sarhan, Pangi, Puh and Sungra located along the bank of river Satluj the road finaly enters Tibet at Shipki La Pass.

Rampur

Rampur was once the capital of the princely state of Bushair and major centre on the old trade route of the Tibet. Rampur located on the bank of river satluj which starts from Mansarover in tibet and crosses the indian border at the shipki pass. West of the town there are the wide terrraces of the satluj upto tattapani where the hot spring are situated. The annual Lavi fair held in second week of November is still an very important event for the people of the region. During this fair the town is festive with trade, cultural and sports activities. The inhabitants of the region gather here to buy,sell and barter their produce - raw wool, shawls and handicrafts along with dry fruits,chilgoza almonds etc. Rampur is around 140 km from Shimla. A night halt for trekkers to Kinnaur, the land of kinners, here are a Buddhist Monastary with a huge prayer wheel and a Hindu temple both visited by thousands of devotees every year.

   
Jhakri

This place is well known for Nathpa Jhakri Project. Just 10km from Rampur this project is under construction of a pick up Dam on the river Satluj at Nathpa about 3.8 km down stream of Wangtu in Kinnaur region for diversion of a design discharge of 284cu. through a 27.7km tunnel aligned on the left bank utilising a head of 490 meters. Currently the installed capacity of the Dam is about 1025MW but in future it will generate about 5000MW.

   
Karcham

Situated at the height of 1899 meters at the confluence of the Satluj and Baspa rivers a beautiful and calm village and the start of the picturesque Sangla valley which is 18km from Karcham. The route goes past the villages Wangtu, Jeori and Tapri Karcham is 57km from Rampur.

   
Powari

Powari is the last major stop on the National Highway No. 22 with a petrol pump. Powari is 70 km from Rampur. The link road to the district headquarters Recong Peo, takes off from Powari.

Ribba :- Just 16 km from Powari on National Highway is famous for its vineyards and the local wine "Angoori" made from the grapes.

   
Moorang

Moorang is 26 km from Powari. This village is well known for the orchards of apricot. Moorang is situated at an altitude of 2276 meters. The village is encircled by high mountains on three side except west side. There is an ancient fort in the Moorang which is believed to have been built by Pandavas.

   
Puh

Surrounded by lush green field Puh is located at the height of 2837 meters and 58 km from Powari is now the headquarter of a sub division and tehsil. Thios is remarkable for the contrast with its green fields, vineyards and orchards of apricot.

   
Recong Peo

Known also as Peo is 260 km from Shimla and 7 km from Powari. Recong Peo is the Headquarters of the district located at the altitude of 2670 meters. It has a fine view of Kinner Kailash.

   
Kalpa

The main village of the district 14km from Powari connected by link road and 84 km from Rampur situated at the height of 2759 meters. The spectacular view of Kinner Kailash ranges can be seen from here. They are a spetacular sight early in the morning, as the rising sun touches the snowy peaks with crimson and gold light.
