Mount Abu

Rajasthan conjures up an image of an arid desert land but the state has one of the best hill resorts in India. The hill station of Mount Abu, is located atop a 1,220 meter high plateau in the Aravalli hills and though it can be visited any time of the year, the best time many say is in the autumn months. Mount Abu, which according to a legend gets its name from Arbuda, a serpent who had saved Lord Shiva's bull, Nandi's life, has many tourist attractions that you can visit while you spend your holidays in the hill station. For instance, you can visit the Nakki Lake, which is an artificial lake, popular for boating. Two sunset points that are popular, are the Sunset Point and the Honeymoon Point. The Sunset Point also has an amusement park making it a great place for both parents and children.

During the period of the Maharaja's, it was used as a place of leisure by the royalties and semi-royalties. The place presents an interesting contrast of British style bungalows and holiday lodges of the royals (Thikhana) with various tribal communities residing amidst the thick lush forest on the hills surrounding the region.

The flora and fauna enjoys the adulation of the tourist to the fullest. The highest point of the Aravali is the 'Guru Shikhar' with a vast sanctuary that shelters a number of species like langur, wild boars, Sambar, leopards and many more along with a number of flowering plants and trees, which enhance the beauty of the whole scenery.

One cannot imagine going to Mount Abu, and not taking a tour of the Dilwara temples. The temples were built between 11th and 13th century and are known for their intricate carvings and workmanship. The tourists can also check out the wildlife sanctuary, which is quite close to Neminath. Other places worth a visit are the Brahma Kumari Spiritual University, which holds free meditation classes daily, Adhar devi temple, built inside a natural cleft in the rock, Doodh Baori, close to the Brahma Kumari University and Guru Shikhar, which is the highest peak of the Aravalli range.
